Reading at Cops & KidsLinda Weiss, Volunteer

“RSVP has given me more opportunities to expand my horizons. I’ve become much more aware of the many opportunities for people to volunteer in our community since joining RSVP”, stated Linda Weiss of Bethlehem.

Linda retired from the Bethlehem School District after teaching second graders for many years. She reflected that perhaps it was her many years in front of the classroom that makes her look for assignments where she can maintain a certain sense of anonymity. She sees herself as more of a “behind the scenes” person.

Linda was a long-time Musikfest volunteer and through RSVP Linda has explored other opportunities to remain active and involved in her community.

It was her love of children and books that led to her first RSVP assignment at Cops ‘n Kids – a program where she helps sort, shelve, prepare and deliver new and gently used books to children who don’t have their own books to read. These books are distributed through classroom teachers and at family and other special events. Some Wednesdays you’ll also find Linda reading with a small group of students in the Cops ‘n Kids’ Reading Room.

For Linda, an active in swimmer and walker, participating in one-time volunteer events like the CROP Walk to fight hunger and the Turkey Trot to benefit the Historic Bethlehem Partnership were natural fits.

One of the assignments she finds particularly rewarding is delivering books from the Bethlehem Area Public Library to homebound individuals. Linda also helps in the office of Meals on Wheels of Northampton County two days each month.

Linda’s well-developed people skills are certainly an asset in all her volunteer work. Numerous non-profit agencies and the people they serve benefit from her dedication, commitment and “behind-the-scenes” contributions.
